College Writing When I was a senior in high school, I had an ogre for an English teacher. Mr. Bergan was one of the toughest teachers I ever had. The class was College Prepatory writing, and the goal was that, by the time we were finished, we should be able to write concise, well organized papers that would be acceptable to college level professors. Every day we would write papers, and Mr. Bergan closely read every one of them. Then he would hand them back with the details of any problems, and we would have to fix them. No one got an A from Bergan on their first hand in. He demanded perfection: any extra fluff had to be trimmed from the paper; any paper that did not end where it started had to be re-written so it did; if the†¦show more content†¦The first draft is the one I hand in. I dont believe that my first drafts are perfect, I simply dont leave myself enough time to fix any problems the paper may have. I firmly believe that I am not alone in this problem. I know of many students that wait until the last minute to write a paper, so they dont ever re-read their own writing and they miss simple problems like run-on sentences, sentence fragments and even spelling errors (which can be fixed simply by running spell-checker). If students applied themselves to their work, the quality of their papers would improve. In America, we use the English language every day--that is obvious. Yet in classrooms, most of the students seem to think that writing papers is an unnecessary hassle; it is merely busywork assigned by the teacher in order to give a grade. They dont seem to realize that every discipline requires communication skills. From business majors to future police officers, everyone will need to write papers: business reports, scientific findings, research reports, field reports, and so on. I do not believe that the importance of good writing is stressed enough. If students were taught how important writing is, perhaps they would take it more seriously, and devote more time to learning writing skills. The basic rules of the English language never change.
